RESIDENTS of Scott Sentral and Villa Scott condominiums in Brickfields will be taking legal action to put a stop to a 38-storey office block that is being built on a small piece of land in their neighbourhood measuring 1,208sqm.
Several residents who were against the development gathered outside the project site to express their objection, alongside Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun.
They had a meeting later and decided to pool money to take legal action against the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Housing and Local Government Ministry, to challenge the basis of approval for the project.
Fong pledged to contribute RM5,000 to kick off the funds.
Scott Sentral management committee(MC) member Chandra Ramprakash said the MC has lodged many complaints to DBKL and the police, raising concerns about public safety, but the project was going on.
Chandra said that he has a background in the construction industry and added that there were many safety breaches at the project site which seems to have been overlooked by the authorities.
"The safety of the people and properties surrounding the construction site are at great risk. We are not getting any answers to our concerns from the authorities," he said.
V.Nita, 46, said a trailer was having so much difficulty trying to get into the site on Nov 23 that it held up traffic along Jalan Scott for about 10 minutes.
"I was on my way back home after buying groceries and had to wait while carrying heavy bags in both my hands," she said.
"The trailer was long and was going back and forth trying to turn into the site.
"The noise from the site is also unbearable. My two children who are studying online and my mother, an elderly person, cannot take the noise and have asked to move out," she added.
M.Nagaratnam, 68, who owns a unit in Villa Scott said his tenant had moved out because of the construction.
"I do not think I will get a tenant if the project continues. It is a loss of revenue for me," he said.
C.Dharvind, 26, said beside the four Hindu temples, there were three wedding halls along Jalan Scott, which were already causing parking problems and traffic congestion.
He said it was very likely that all three wedding halls could be booked at the same time during the wedding season.
"If that happens, there would be about 1,000 additional cars on this road. Where will all the cars be parked? Parking was an existing problem here. This commercial project will add to it," he said.
